Hatherleigh is home to a diverse and vibrant community, who love to make things happen. From weekly dance and exercise classes, all the way through to fire-lit carnivals and summer music/arts festivals. Below we have compiled a list of local groups and activities. As you’ll see, there really is something for everyone in this small town.
With records dating all the way back to 1086, Hatherleigh History Society hold countless documents, images and literature on the history of Hatherleigh. Be sure to visit their website and follow their social media pages if you’re curious about the history of your home.
Hatherleigh Silver Band are an award winning brass band, currently contesting in the first section. The band have a purpose-built practice room and always offer a warm welcome to anybody wishing to learn how to play.
Hatherleigh residents are incredibly lucky, in that we have our very own annual Arts and Music Festival, hosted in The Square, off Market Street. The Festival Committee are always on the look-out for creative and practical new members to assist with putting on the event.
“It’s behind you”, “Oh no it isn’t”. Hatherleigh players are a fun, vibrant bunch of AmDram enthusiasts who put on annual performances in the Community Centre. Speak to Dame Cindy Squires to find out more.
Kyra and her team of volunteers at Hatherleigh Youth Cafe offer a free drop-in service for young people aged 13-17, every Thursday at the Old Schools from 7PM-9PM.

Hatherleigh CC offers opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to play, train, and compete in friendly matches. The clubhouse has recently undergone extensive refurbishment and is available to hire for parties, conferences, meetings and other events.
Hatherleigh Football Club provides a space for players of all ages and abilities to play, train and develop their skills, as well as offering the Clubhouse as a hub for social events and gatherings.

Hatherleigh Community Centre is a hub for community activities, events, and gatherings. It offers a variety of spaces, including a large hall, fully equipped kitchen, meeting room, bar, and outdoor space.
St. John’s Church is a historic place of worship, dating back to the 15th century. It offers a peaceful setting for religious services and events, as well as being a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts. The church is widely known for its unusual architecture and beautiful stained glass windows.
The Old School Room in Hatherleigh is a historic building, once used as a school, it is now a community space which is available to hire. It offers a flexible space for events, meetings and workshops, within a charming and traditional setting.
Owned and managed by Hatherleigh Town Council, Island Park has been developed over the last 10 years and now consists of a play park, skate plaza, picnic area, and riverside seating areas.
The Square is actually built on the footprint of the original market buildings. This area now plays host to live music events, cider and pasty evenings and jumble sales throughout the year. A small team of hard-working volunteers make sure that the flower beds are well stocked with perennial pollinators throughout the spring and summer, too.
The Tennis Court is located just north of the football club and is available to hire (collect keys from Texaco, Bridge Garage). Equipment is not supplied at the court, so you will need to bring your own rackets and ball.
Hatherleigh is hope to over 400 acres of managed moorland, providing ample areas to walk and to explore some of the most panoramic views in West Devon. Please remember to keep dogs on leads around livestock.
